Herpes vaccination - 12-07-2006, 01:09 AM

I recently read that an effective vaccine for herpes may be available in 3-5 years, but the vaccines would only work to prevent the infection in new patients. Has anyone heard anything more about this?

There is currently a hpv vaccination available (very limited supply) for young girls in their teens. It has been shown to not be very effective when given to older women, and it has no benefits for males. It also has no effect on someone already living with hpv.

There are also some on-going trials for vaccines that look promising for woman. Again, men are out of luck. However, eliminating herpes in one sex means that anyone having heterosexual encounters won't be spreading herpes.

I certainly hope that this is something they will continue to work on and hopefully find a way to make it effective for everyone of all ages and both males and females.

It would be so nice if they could create something that would benefit everyone. Technology makes new advancements everyday and there is more and available to researchers all the time so I do hold hope that the day will come that something like this will work for everyone.

I've read a herpes vaccination will be available in 3 to 5 years too. It seems they've been studying it for a long time too, look at this article about a huge trial they did in 2002 Med School tests new herpes vaccine - News
Since it was a large study and had positive results you'd think they'd have the vaccine out six year later!

And I don't see why a doctor wouldn't prescribe it to a man if he is willing to pay for it. I hope my boyfriend will be able to get the vaccine before I infect him.
